Because it’s painted, we use tulipwood to make this bed. It’s a hardwood that’s especially good for this kind of finish because it has a very fine, almost knot-free grain, so the surface will be smooth. You’ll feel the quality of the timber, but not see its texture.
We take great care over our painted finishes and give every design exactly what it needs to make it robust. The number of base and top coats will vary according to how many that shade requires. And we use a mixture of spray-painted and hand-painted techniques so the finish is as perfect as can be.
The bed base
Chichester’s sides and end sit snugly underneath the mattress so you won’t be able to see the slats beneath, so it asks for a little less room, and so you’re not as likely to bump your shins when walking around it in the dark.
Underneath the mattress
Beech is used to make the slats on each of our beds because it’s flexible and reliable. The slats are sprung – they curve upwards – so they provide a little extra bounce underneath the mattress. They’re held in place with discreet, cream-coloured clips. And beds larger than a single have an extra support in the centre.
Considered details in Chichester’s design (like scalloped corners on the base, grooves on each gently-tapered leg and ball finials on the bedposts) subtly elevate it: it’s simple, but not plain. We’ve also included plain caps for the bedposts, so you can remove the ball finials if you prefer.
The perfect pairing
If you like, you can fit a valance over the base of this bed (another opportunity to introduce the texture and colour of fabric to your bedroom). Our Alice valance – which has neat box-pleat edges and is available in a variety of textiles – will fit perfectly.
Delivered to you, safe and sound
From our own, white-glove service for delivering larger pieces in the UK and Ireland, to our courier and international partners, rest assured that we’ve done everything we can to make sure your order gets to you on time and in one, perfect piece.
Delivery’s also entirely free if you’re in the UK and spend over £50 (or €100 in Ireland).
We believe that returns should be easy, which is why we approach them with a ‘no quibble’ mindset. And, you’ll also have 28 days to do so – just in case you need time to mull things over.
When it comes to designs upholstered in a made-to-order fabric or painted in a bespoke colour, there’s also a 20% returns/cancellation fee. We’d love to not have to charge a penny for this, but as they’re made just for you, we can’t always guarantee that we’ll be able to sell them again.
If you’ve bought something from us outside the UK or Ireland, just get in touch with the store you bought it from – or with our international team if you bought it through them – and they’ll let you know how you can return or exchange it.
And talk to our international team on +44 (0)1793 427 427 or at email@example.com.

Just so you know
The colours in our paint palette shown here are a close representation of their true shades, but to see the real thing, we suggest trying our sample paint pots.
Our beds are designed to suit metric-sized mattresses (UK single, double, king and super-king sizes), like our own Barrington. They don’t come with the mattress or any bedding, so you can choose what suits you best, whether that’s a firm or medium mattress, cotton or linen sheets.
