Wardley is our take on the traditional four-poster bed. It commands attention – as any four-poster will – but, with its pared-back frame, it still feels airy (even when hung with its curtains ). The painted version is more contemporary than its solid oak sibling.

When it comes to designs upholstered in a made-to-order fabric or painted in a bespoke colour, there’s also a 20% returns/cancellation fee. We’d love to not have to charge a penny for this, but as they’re made just for you, we can’t always guarantee that we’ll be able to sell them again.

We’ve put together this guide on taking care of your bed so that it stays looking as beautiful as the day you first brought it home.

The colours in our paint palette shown here are a close representation of their true shades, but to see the real thing, we suggest trying our sample paint pots.

Because Imogen Holkham Sand is made from natural linen, tone and texture can vary and you can expect to see the occasional slub. We’ve written an article about the personality behind each of our fabrics, in case you’d like to get to know them better. Read on

Our beds are designed to suit metric-sized mattresses (UK single, double, king and super-king sizes), like our own Barrington. They don’t come with the mattress or any bedding, so you can choose what suits you best, whether that’s a firm or medium mattress, cotton or linen sheets.

A closer look at Wardley

Materials

When it comes to painted timber, we use tulipwood – a strong and resilient hardwood. Its fine, almost knot-free grain makes it perfectly suited to a painted finish, so you get the best of both worlds – strength and smoothness.

Finish

Not every piece of furniture and every colour of paint needs the same process – a ‘one finish suits all’ approach won’t ever give you the best result possible. That’s why we vary the number of coats and use both hand-painted and spray-painted techniques depending on what that shade requires.

Upholstery

The textile used on Wardley’s headboard, Imogen Holkham Sand, is woven from layers of both bleached and unbleached linen. It’s soft and has a relaxed texture that’s just right for bedrooms. If you’d like a change later down the line, the panel can be removed and reupholstered.

Design detail

Wardley can be disassembled, making it easy to manoeuvre in and out of doorways. But, we’ve used clever hidden brackets to secure the rails around its top, to ensure strength and sturdiness. It’s a detail that’s felt, rather than seen.
