The Shaker kitchen

What is Shaker?

Shaker style is all about minimalism, function and quality.

It started with the Shakers themselves back in the 18th century – they were a religious group who believed that beauty rests on utility – and it’s an ethos that’s continued right through to today.

Ladder-back chairs, peg rails, oval timber boxes: they’re all designs we have to thank the Shakers for.

Shaker style in the kitchen

Start with the fundamentals

When it comes to kitchens, what people often say is Shaker isn’t always quite right. The image of a white kitchen with oak knobs and worktops isn’t the definition of Shaker-inspired design.

What Shaker’s really about is purpose: nothing’s there just for decorative detail.

Suffolk’s always been our Shaker kitchen collection, but we updated it so it’s even more true to its Shaker roots.

The cabinetry is as simple as possible – the drawer fronts are smooth, and the cupboard door design’s framed because it makes them stronger, not because it looks lovely.

Then there’s the things that make it a joy to live with, like practical pre-lit cupboards and fully-adjustable shelving, natural materials and expert craftsmanship.

All of which will bring a sense of order and calm to a room that’s usually the busiest in the home.

Shaker-style in your home

Shaker kitchens can be contemporary, and they can be traditional. You could make yours bright and bold or serene and subtle. How you choose to interpret the style, blend it into your home, and put your own stamp on it is entirely up to you.

Suffolk will always have the same, pared-back feel, but you can make it completely your own. Choose from over 28 paint shades, marble, granite, oak and quartz work surfaces, and a whole host of handle styles.
