A nod to the rich heritage of traditional turned wooden lamp bases, Highgate is skyward bound as the table light collection is joined by a floor lamp. Design und Technik
The materials
Oak’s sense of tradition together with its distinctive (but not too knotty) grain make it our go-to timber for classic pieces. With this lamp, the traditional craftsmanship also plays a part in highlighting the heritage of the oak. The art of turning wood on a lathe (a machine that rotates an item on its axis) dates as far back as the Romans but became popular again in England during the 19th to early 20th centuries with specialist turning shops. Highgate has been made using this craft by carving the wood into a rounded, decorative shape that makes a feature of its natural grain.
The finish
All our oak is finished with IsoGuard oil; a natural, linseed-oil based formula that protects the wood from oxidising and discolouring, as well as day-to-day mishaps such as knocks and spills. It also doesn’t contain any VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds, which release harmful chemicals and unpleasant odours) and, our Seasoned Oak finish has a very subtle silvered pigment so it won’t mask the oak’s character.
Design detail
At 120cm in height, this floor lamp is a little shorter than standard versions, but this means it won’t dominate the room and will slot neatly next to a sofa or armchair. Its base also takes up minimal floor space at 25cm, so it’s ideal for more compact areas, and it has a soft, felted bottom that will prevent floor marks if you move it around the room. The lamp also features over two metres of vintage-inspired brown fabric flex and has an inline switch to make it quick and easy to turn on and off.
Doing the right thing
This lamp is made with wood from the Appalachian Mountains, a region where, for every tree harvested or decaying, 2.4 naturally grow back in its place which contributes to forest regeneration.
The perfect pairing
You can couple this lamp with any shade (provided it has an E27 bulb fitting), but we’ve narrowed it down to two that we think go best with Highgate’s tall, slim design. Our Oliver and Henry shades in Warm White suit this floor lamp in size, style and material. Their rounded shapes match well with the turned lamp body and they’re a mix of cotton and linen for a fine but slightly slubbed texture.
Oliver is a wide ‘empire’ shape that’s quite traditional, whereas the slightly sloped ‘French drum’ Henry has a more modern feel. In Warm White, they’ll both diffuse light more evenly around the room than a thicker fabric and they’ll also bring warmth and an ambient atmosphere to your home.
