Alex is a simplified and more linear interpretation of the Curule stool, a cross-legged design from Ancient Rome. Because the shape is so uncomplicated, the fine joinery and the beauty of the solid oak becomes even more apparent.

Frame & filling

We build our frames using solid timber and proper joinery – they’re pieces of furniture in their own right. Out of all of our stools, Alex is the most likely to be used just as a stool, so we’ve used a firm foam around its perimeter so you’ll never feel the frame beneath, but softer padding in the centre and webbing under that for a comfortable sit or place to prop up your feet.

Form and function

It’s Alex’s unassuming design and convenient size that make it such a versatile piece. It’s equally at home in a bedroom to use as a dressing table seat, sat in front of a piano, or as a side table-meets-footstool in a living space.

Design detail

Alex’s intersecting legs are made using halving joints. This is a traditional joinery technique, where sections of each piece of timber are cut away to allow them to seamlessly slot together. Oak rods join both sides for extra stability.
