A closer look at Carter

This Carter stool’s useful to have around for when you need an extra seat, because when you’re not using it, it’ll store easily. You could also use several where chairs take up too much space and you need your dining seating to tuck neatly underneath the table. Style-wise, it’s our take on industrial style: made from oak and steel, but in a refined and timeless way.

Materials & finish: oak

With oak, you can expect the odd knot here and change in wood grain there – which means no two pieces look quite the same – but overall, it’s a well-balanced timber. We’ve then brushed, stained and buffed it to make it darker and more textured, before finishing it with IsoGuard®. This is our treatment oil that adds an invisible barrier of protection, so you’d never know it was there.

Materials & finish: steel

Steel’s incredibly strong, which is why it’s used so much in things like bridges and buildings. So, it’s also brilliant for making Carter’s slim legs. It gets its bold, graphite grey colour from powder-coating: a finish that’s durable too. And it has a hint of warm bronze colour in there, so it doesn’t feel so cold and industrial.

Comfort and proportions

Carter’s straight-lined, just like the rest of the collection. It’s part of its contemporary look. So, it’s firm, but if you want something softer, then a cushion, throw or sheepskin rugs would all look good on its simple design.

Design detail

This is a design that’s as pared-back as it gets. But that doesn’t mean it’s any less considered than a more complex piece. The legs, for instance, are perfectly in proportion to the oak seat. And underneath are discreet rubber feet, so you can place it on hard flooring and it won’t leave a mark.
