Design & engineering
The materials
Hugo is made from 100% linen and has an even weave with a few slubs to give the fabric a tactile finish. This result is achieved through the combination of dry- and wet-spinning, where the long fibres are smoothed out with water to produce a uniform texture and the other dry fibres are slightly less refined to give it a rustic feel. The yarns are also twisted together to give the material strength that’s designed to last.
Doing the right thing
Hugo has a high rub count score which means it is suitable for everyday use (this is the number of times the fabric can be rubbed before the abrasion begins to break the yarn). So, it’s a fabric which will wear well over the years. It’s also made from 100% linen; flax is a renewable resource that has a limited impact on the environment due to its longevity.

Need to know
There can be some colour variation between different batches of our fabric – we try to make this as minimal as possible, but it’s something to be expected with natural fibres. If you’re using this fabric more than once in the same room, we recommend ordering as many metres as you need in one go –that way, we can make sure it’s all from the same batch.
Slubs are the slightly raised or thicker parts of the thread that you often see on linen fabrics – they’re a completely normal feature of this weave. They give the finished textile personality, texture and interest and show that it’s made from natural fibres.
A note on safety: if you’d like to use this fabric to upholster a piece of furniture yourself, then you should purchase an interliner (which you can find at upholstery and fabric shops) to go with it. This is also known as a barrier cloth which is used underneath the main fabric to ensure that the upholstered furnishing meets fire regulations. It won’t make the fabric completely fire retardant, but it will slow down a fire should it catch alight. Of course, if you order this or any of our fabrics on Neptune pre-upholstered pieces, we’ll also use the relevant interliner.
A Martindale score is the amount of rubs an upholstery fabric can take before it begins to show signs of wear – in short, it’s a durability test. We split the results of these tests into three categories: low, medium and high. Our low rub count – between 10,000 to 15,000 – means the material is suitable for occasionally used furniture for short periods of time, such as bedroom pieces. The medium rub count sits between 15,000 to 25,000 and is ideal for general upholstery in the home that’s used every day like armchairs and sofas. Our high rub count is between 25,000 to 30,000 or more – any fabric with this score can cope well when used every day in public places such as hotels, as well as the home.
