Chichester Countertop Open Washstand

Change colour

A closer look at Chichester

When a bathroom is in need of light and space, we’ll opt for an open washstand like Chichester. While things will be a little more on-display than in a closed piece, it still offers practical storage (especially when paired with baskets) and has the open, airy feel of a console table. Its basin sits on top, much like a jug and bowl would’ve traditionally done.

Materials

This washstand is made from tulipwood and oak: tulipwood for painting, because it has a fine grain that creates a smooth surface; and oak for the worktop, because of its characterful grain and colour variations. With a little looking after (and we’ve included a guide on that), they’ll both be happy in a bathroom.

The finish: paint

We take great care over our painted finishes and give every design what it needs to be robust. We vary the number of coats and use both hand-painted and spray-painted techniques depending on what that shade requires. We also use our low-sheen, water-based eggshell, which is perfectly suited to bathrooms.

The finish: IsoGuard®

Chichester’s worktop is protected with IsoGuard®, which makes the oak easier to live with but doesn’t mask its matte, lightly-textured surface. It’s linseed-based, an oil which does initially darken the timber, but the clever pigments in our Natural finish replenish the original, soft-toned colour.

The basin

All our bathroom basins are ceramic – it’s the material we’ve found to be the best combination of durability and looks. Here, it’s a classic bowl shape that’s designed to leave plenty of room on top for a tap and accessories, but that’s still large enough for hand-washing and face-cleansing.

What about taps?

We haven’t included taps with this washstand, so you can pick the style that suits you most. For that reason, we also haven’t drilled tap holes into the worktop – your plumber will be able to do this for you though. The taps we’d recommend are either single lever or wall-mounted designs.

Storage

If you’re using the shelves as storage space, it’s a good idea to add a basket or two so they don’t look cluttered – our Somerton and Ashcroft baskets fit perfectly. There’s also a slim, soft-close drawer that’s designed to fit around the waste pipe and make the most of this space for smaller items.

Design detail

Chichester embodies everything we love about classic English design. This washstand is pared-back but subtly traditional, with decorative detail coming from the joinery – the tabletop which has a curved edge to match that of the basin; and the carved grooves on the shelf, legs and drawer.

Just so you know

The colours in our paint palette shown here are a close representation of their true shades, but to see the real thing, we suggest trying our sample paint pots.

This washstand comes with Chrome hardware – including muffled magnetic door catches and Chichester knobs – to match most tap finishes.

All our basins have ‘flip-top’ (also known as swivel) plugs. But, these can be easily removed if you’d prefer a different style.

This piece is made from natural timber, which will expand (slightly) and shrink (just a little) as it responds to the humidity and temperature in your room. We’ve used joinery techniques that’ll help to counteract this, but small changes in your piece are completely natural and to be expected. Just know that, in the very unlikely event that there’s a significant change to the structure, we’ll be here to help.

Taking care

We’ve put together a series of guides on how best to take care of your Chichester washstand, so you can keep them looking as good as the day you first brought them home.

We take our delivery service seriously. Neptune transport, Neptune people, Neptune service.

Our white glove service means you’ll have a two-man delivery team. That means no heavy lifting on your part is needed. They’ll take it to your desired spot, assemble it for you and take away the packaging for recycling. The assembly service does exclude fitted furniture.

No-quibble returns

Returns should be easy, that’s why we have a ‘no quibble’ mindset.

If you decide on the day that it’s not for you then our delivery team can take it away for you there and then. But if you’d rather mull things over, you have 28 days to make up your mind. We do charge a pick-up fee of £29.95 here though, because we’ll need to send our delivery team back out.

And when it comes to designs upholstered in a made-to-order fabric or painted in a bespoke colour, there’s also a 30% returns/cancellation fee. We’d love to not have to charge a penny for this, but as they’re made just for you, we can’t always guarantee that we’ll be able to sell them again.
