A closer look at Wardley

There’s a sense of heritage and craft in Wardley – a classic Windsor chair made contemporary. It’s a style that’s been around since the 18th-century, that we’ve simplified and added Shaker-style joinery details to. It’s good for when you want a minimal look but still plenty of character (just like the Arundel table and bench, which it pairs well with). It’s also surprisingly comfortable, thanks to the curves in its design.

Materials

Wardley’s made from our timber of choice for unpainted pieces: oak, our favourite because of its characterful (but not too knotty) grain – which means no two chairs will ever look quite the same – its strength and its sense of heritage.

Finish

We protect our oak pieces with IsoGuard®, our timber treatment oil. Think of it as a defence barrier, but one that doesn’t mask the oak’s character and matt texture. IsoGuard® comes in a few finishes; this one’s Darkened Oak, which lends the timber a rich brown colour and highlights the grain in Wardley’s turned spindles.

Comfort and proportions

It may be made from wood, but Wardley doesn’t compromise on comfort. The top rail of the backrest curves to meet the shoulder blades, and there’s a barely detectable (until you sit in it), leg-hugging saddle shape to the seat.

Design detail

To give it a crafted feel, the foxtail joints that attach the legs are visible in the seat. Sometimes they’re flush, sometimes they sit just proud (although you won’t feel them) – a variation that means each chair has its own character. From the back, there’s also the swallowtail detail usually found on Shaker boxes.

This piece is made from natural timber, which will expand (slightly) and shrink (just a little) as it responds to the humidity and temperature in your room. We’ve used joinery techniques that’ll help to counteract this, but small changes in your piece are completely natural and to be expected. Just know that, in the very unlikely event that there’s a significant change to the structure, we’ll be here to help.

The timber in this design is finished with IsoGuard® – our innovative protective formula that helps to stop spills from leaving a stain. It doesn’t take a lot of effort to care for a design that’s treated with IsoGuard®, but we have created a few products that can help. You’ll find all these here.

We’ve put together this guide on taking care of your sideboard, so that it stays looking as beautiful as the day you first brought it home.
