A closer look at Shepton

Tall, slim, glass-fronted Shepton is our curio cabinet for when floorspace is tight – although its uses go beyond just displaying collected finds. Fill its (deceptively) deep, adjustable shelves with crockery and glassware and welcome it into a kitchen. Or, give it purpose as a storage piece-meets-bookcase in an office. It could even be a larder, or perhaps a linen cupboard. And that’s where its beauty really lies: as a timeless design that can evolve alongside you and your home.

Made to stand the test of time

Its proportions might be elegantly slim, but that doesn’t mean Shepton is a wobbly, delicate piece. We’ve used some clever joinery – like the way the legs form part of the sides of the cabinet to create a sturdy frame, and the timber zig-zag shelf supports which can take as many books or plates as you rest on them – to make sure it stays standing strong for generations to come.

Form and function

Shepton ticks the usability box with its fully adjustable shelves which, despite its small footprint, are large enough to hold dinner plates or magazine files. Personality-wise, it’s quite a simple, timeless piece. We’ve just added a little detail with a stop-chamfer edge down the sides, which emphasises the shape of the feet and adds a touch more refinement.

Why tulipwood?

Tulipwood is always the timber we turn to when we know we’re going to use a painted finish. That’s because, as well as being strong and stable, it also has a very fine, very even grain. Because there’s little in the way of knots and swirls, it’s easy to create a flat, smooth and practically perfect finish using eggshell paint which, later down the line, you can easily repaint or touch up.

The finish

You can choose from any of our colours for Shepton’s exterior and interior, each applied in our water-based eggshell using a mix of spray and hand-painting techniques so the finish is perfect as can be. By using eggshell, rather than a seemingly more hardwearing plastic coating, you can not only repaint easily, but your cabinet will have a soft, low-sheen finish that’s so much more tactile and has a greater depth of colour.

The hardware

We’ve chosen our Black-Bronze hardware for Shepton, a finish that combines a little of bronze’s warmth with a statement blackened overlay. With use, it’ll gradually take on more patina. The handle on the door is our elliptical Barlow, chosen because its elongated shape suits the cabinet’s proportions, and we’ve paired it with matching hinges and magnetic catches.

Need to know

Your Shepton cabinet will come with anti-tilt brackets to attach it to the wall (we’ve included full instructions on how to use these, you’ll just need to supply your own wall fixings depending on the type of wall). These must be used in order to prevent the cabinet from accidentally tipping forward.

Natural timber will always want to move. It’s going to expand and shrink as the temperature and humidity in your home changes, but there are specialist joinery techniques that can help to counteract the movement. And that’s exactly what we do, so although you might see a little movement in the timber over the seasons, it won’t change drastically.

We recommend that you anchor this piece to the wall, just to be safe.
