Suffolk 4ft Sideboard

Change colour

A closer look at Suffolk

Just like the Suffolk kitchen, this sideboard is a Shaker-inspired piece: in short, it’s the one to choose if you love pared-back design. And because the focus is on the natural materials rather than design details, it also means it works just as well in a contemporary home as it does a traditional one, and will always feel completely timeless.

Materials: oak

The top is made from oak, because it’ll look more than good in your home. You can expect the odd knot here and the odd change in wood grain there – which means no two pieces will ever look quite the same – but overall, it’s a well-balanced timber.

Materials: tulipwood

But when it comes to painted timber, we use tulipwood – a strong and resilient hardwood. Its fine, almost knot-free grain makes it perfectly suited to a painted finish, so you get the best of both worlds – strength and smoothness.

Finish: IsoGuard®

The oak is protected with IsoGuard®, our timber treatment oil. Think of it as a defence barrier, but one that you’d never know was there. IsoGuard® comes in a few finishes; this one’s Seasoned Oak and it gives Suffolk a subtle, silvered colour – like naturally weathered timber.

Finish: paint

Not every piece of furniture and every colour of paint needs the same process – a ‘one finish suits all’ approach won’t ever give you the best result possible. That’s why we vary the number of coats and use both hand-painted and spray-painted techniques depending on what that shade needs.

Design detail

Suffolk might not have lots of obvious design details, but it’s got plenty of smaller ones that are both attractive and practical. Like softly closing drawers that sit on runners hidden underneath. And doors that shut on chrome magnetic catches. We’ve even considered the shelf supports: the timber zig-zag design can take a lot of weight and makes it easy for you to rearrange.

Where to use a sideboard

A dining room is the most obvious place to have a sideboard, where you can use it to hold glassware, napkins and serving platters that you either don’t have space for in the kitchen or want close to the table. But, one can also go anywhere you need storage that feels lighter than full-height cabinetry and dressers.

Just so you know

The colours you see here are as close to the real thing as we can get them, but it’s always a good idea to try a sample first if you’re looking to get the colour spot on. Natural timber will always want to move. It’s going to expand and shrink as the temperature and humidity in your home changes, but there are specialist joinery techniques that can help to counteract the movement. And that’s exactly what we do, so although you might see a little movement in the timber over the seasons, it won’t change drastically. We’ve included both oak and chrome Suffolk knobs, so you can choose whichever suits your room best.

Taking care of Suffolk

The timber in this design is finished with IsoGuard® – our innovative protective formula that helps to stop spills from leaving a stain. It doesn’t take a lot of effort to care for a design that’s treated with IsoGuard®, but we have created a few products that can help. You’ll find all these here.

You want: easy-to-care-for pieces that you don’t need to tiptoe around. We’ve got: easy-to-read-through care guides that give you just that. Right this way.
