Carter 4-8 Seater Dining Table

A closer look at Carter

The Carter dining table is made from a slim steel frame that’s powder coated and then baked as an ode to the traditional process of quenching, paired with an oak top. It’s our refined and timeless interpretation of industrial style. It also extends easily thanks to the clever engineering underneath.

We use oak because of its beautiful grain, its durability and its sense of heritage (we’ve written more on oak’s qualities here). Part of its character are its knots and variations in tone, so each piece will have its own hand-writing. In Carter, it’s combined with incredibly strong steel.

The finish: oak

The oak top goes through a seven-step process of brushing, staining and buffing to make it feel just a little rustic without the need to use aged timber. It’s then protected with IsoGuard®, our treatment oil that makes oak easier to live with but that doesn’t mask its character. We’ve aptly called the resulting appearance Vintage Oak.

The finish: steel

Traditionally, steel would’ve been given a blackened appearance through quenching. But it’s an industrial process that’s just not practical for us, so we powder-coat Carter’s legs instead. This leaves an almost-black colour with a hint of bronze, and a permanently durable finish.

In the making

In all our tables, we use joinery techniques that help to counteract timber’s natural tendency to expand (slightly) and shrink (just a little) as it adjusts to the temperature and humidity of your home.

Rectangular tables can often seem formal, but Carter’s industrial styling feels much more casual, especially when paired with the Carter bench. This also makes it ideal for larger gatherings. Its straight lines will bring crispness to its setting.

Design detail

The way we’ve designed Carter’s tabletop is rather special. It’s made from just a few, whole pieces of oak that run from one end right to the other; it’s quite rare to find timber this long. So, even extended, the grain will match perfectly all the way along. It’s something we’ve spoken more about here. Beneath its frame are rubber feet, so it won’t mark hard flooring.

How it extends

Coordinating oak and steel rails pull out from underneath Carter’s tabletop and are held in place by the simple click of a spring-loaded latch. The leaves then slot on top (they store separately in a useful bag so they don’t add bulk to the table). It’s such an easy, clever mechanism, that it doesn’t require two people.

Taking care of Carter

We’ve put together this guide on taking care of your dining table, so that it stays looking as beautiful as the day you first brought it home.

We take our delivery service seriously. Neptune transport, Neptune people, Neptune service.

Our white glove service means you’ll have a two-man delivery team. That means no heavy lifting on your part is needed. They’ll take it to your desired spot, assemble it for you and take away the packaging for recycling.

No-quibble returns

We believe that returns should be easy, that’s why we approach them with a ‘no quibble’ mindset. If you decide on the day that it’s not for you then our delivery team can take it away for you there and then, free of charge.

But if you’d rather mull things over, you have 28 days to make up your mind. We do charge a pick-up fee of £29.95 here though, because we’ll need to send our delivery team back out to your address for collection.
