Chichester Chopping Block

Change colour

A closer look at Chichester

Not so long ago, all the cabinetry in a kitchen would’ve been freestanding, so a piece like this chopping block is a way to bring in a little of this traditional style. It’s also practical: good if you need extra storage and prep space. Part of our Chichester collection, its design is understated and classic, made from oak and painted timber.

Materials: oak

Not only is oak a characterful but well-balanced timber (you can expect the odd knot here and the odd change in wood grain there), it’s also perfectly food-safe. In this piece, it’s what makes up the chopping board and the frame that surrounds it as well as the shelf and the inside of the drawer.

Materials: tulipwood

When it comes to painted timber though, we use tulipwood – a strong and resilient hardwood. Its fine, almost knot-free grain makes it perfectly suited to a painted finish, so you get the best of both worlds – strength and smoothness.

Finish: IsoGuard®

The oak is protected with IsoGuard®, our timber treatment oil. Think of it as a defence barrier, but one that you’d never know was there. And like the oak, it’s safe to prepare food on. IsoGuard® comes in a few finishes; this one’s Natural Oak, which, as the name suggests, gives the oak a subtle, honey-coloured look.

Finish: paint

Not every piece of furniture and every colour of paint needs the same process – a ‘one finish suits all’ approach won’t ever give you the best result possible. That’s why we vary the number of coats and use both hand-painted and spray-painted techniques depending on what that shade needs.

The chopping board

This is an ‘end-grain’ chopping board – many blocks of oak have been joined together, cut sides up, so that they make a chequerboard pattern. Attractive and practical, the cut side of the oak gives your knife a more fibrous surface to cut into, so it won’t blunt as quickly and the board will show marks less easily.

Design details

There are lots of useful details in this piece. Like the soft-close drawer for keeping knives close at hand; or the fact that you can lift the board for cleaning or taking over to another work surface; and the tongue and groove-style shelf at the bottom where you can store larger pots and pans that won’t fit in your cabinets.

The colours you see here are as close to the real thing as we can get them, but it’s always a good idea to try a sample first if you’re looking to get the colour spot on.

Natural timber will always want to move. It’s going to expand and shrink as the temperature and humidity in your home changes, but there are specialist joinery techniques that can help to counteract the movement. And that’s exactly what we do, so although you might see a little movement in the timber over the seasons, it won’t change drastically.

Care guide

When it comes to the chopping board, hot, soapy water is the best way to clean it. Just don’t soak it, put it in a dishwasher, or leave liquids on its surface for a long time because they could damage the wood. And, as good as IsoGuard® is, staining on the board is much more likely than any other piece: a sign that it’s well-used and much-loved.

Otherwise, we’ve put together a series of guides on how best to take care of your piece, in case any other part of Chichester needs a little attention too.

We take our delivery service seriously. Neptune transport, Neptune people, Neptune service.

Our white glove service means you’ll have a two-man delivery team. That means no heavy lifting on your part is needed. They’ll take it to your desired spot, assemble it for you and take away the packaging for recycling. The assembly service doesn't include fitted furniture.

For homes and customers outside of the UK and Ireland, our international team are here to help arrange shipping and delivery. Call us on +44 (0)1793 427 427 or e-mail [email protected] and together we’ll sort out the best method for you.

No-quibble returns

Returns should be easy, that’s why we have a ‘no quibble’ mindset.

If you decide on the day that it’s not for you then our delivery team can take it away for you there and then. But if you’d rather mull things over, you have 28 days to make up your mind. We do charge a pick-up fee of £29.95 here though, because we’ll need to send our delivery team back out.

And when it comes to designs upholstered in a made-to-order fabric or painted in a bespoke colour, there’s also a 20% returns/cancellation fee. We’d love to not have to charge a penny for this, but as they’re made just for you, we can’t always guarantee that we’ll be able to sell them again.

If you’ve bought something from us outside the UK or Ireland, just get in touch with the store you bought it from – or with our international team if you bought it through them – and they’ll let you know how you can return or exchange it.

And talk to our international team on +44 (0)1793 427 427 or at [email protected]
