Suffolk Chopping Block

A closer look at Suffolk

Whether you have a small or large kitchen, if you’re short on work surface and storage space, a chopping block will give you both. Of the two in our collection, Suffolk has the most contemporary character with its pared-back design and mix of painted timber, steel and oak. But as a freestanding piece, it’ll still give you a sense of heritage.

Materials: oak

Not only is oak a characterful but well-balanced timber (you can expect the odd knot here and the odd change in wood grain there), it’s also perfectly food-safe. In this piece, it’s what makes up the chopping board and the frame that surrounds it as well as the shelf and the inside of the drawer.

Materials: tulipwood

When it comes to painted timber though, we use tulipwood – a strong and resilient hardwood. Its fine, almost knot-free grain makes it perfectly suited to a painted finish, so you get the best of both worlds – strength and smoothness.

Finish: IsoGuard®

The oak is protected with IsoGuard®, our timber treatment oil. Think of it as a defence barrier, but one that you’d never know was there. And like the oak, it’s safe to prepare food on. IsoGuard® comes in a few finishes; this one’s Seasoned Oak and it gives Suffolk a subtle, silvered colour – like naturally weathered timber.

Finish: paint

Not every piece of furniture and every colour of paint needs the same process – a ‘one finish suits all’ approach won’t ever give you the best result possible. That’s why we vary the number of coats and use both hand-painted and spray-painted techniques depending on what that shade needs.

The chopping board: in the making

This is an ‘end-grain’ chopping board – many blocks of oak have been joined together, cut sides up, so that they make a chequerboard pattern. Attractive and practical, the cut side of the oak gives your knife a more fibrous surface to cut into, so it won’t blunt as quickly and the board will show marks less easily.

The chopping board: in detail

Around the edge of the board is a carved channel that’s designed to catch any liquid from whatever you’re chopping. You can also easily lift the board out of the block using the finger hole, so you can carry it over to another work surface or the sink.

Design details

There are lots of other useful details in this piece as well. Like the hidden drawer for keeping knives close at hand; or the stainless-steel hooks, blunt-ended and perfect for hanging mugs, ladles, pans and tied-up bunches of herbs; the rails for draping tea towels over; and the shelf for stock pots and casserole dishes.

Suffolk chopping block

When it comes to the chopping board, hot, soapy water is the best way to clean it. Just don’t soak it, put it in a dishwasher, or leave liquids on its surface for a long time because they could damage the wood. And, as good as IsoGuard® is, staining on the board is much more likely than any other piece: a sign that it’s well-used and much-loved.

Otherwise, we’ve put together a series of guides on how best to take care of your piece, in case any other part of Suffolk needs a little attention too.
