Carter Kitchen Island

A closer look at Carter

With its open-sided, darkened metal frame and tactile, slim oak surfaces, the Carter island will bring lots of character to your kitchen but won’t dominate the space. Similar in size to a dining table, it’s easy to work into a smaller kitchen too, and features two useful storage shelves.

Materials

We use oak because of its beautiful grain, its durability and its sense of heritage (we’ve written more on oak’s qualities here). Knots and variations in tone are completely natural, and with use, it’ll continue to take on character. Here, it’s combined with steel, a metal known for its load-bearing strength.

The finish: oak

The oak goes through a seven-step process of brushing, staining and buffing to highlight its grain. It’s then protected with IsoGuard®, our treatment oil that helps it stand up to spills but that doesn’t mask its matte texture. We’ve aptly called the resulting appearance Dark Vintage Oak.

The finish: steel

Traditionally, steel is given a durable, blackened finish through quenching. But it’s an industrial process that’s just not practical for us, so we powder-coat Carter’s frame instead. Almost black in colour, but with a hint of bronze, it’s a finish that, although it may still show the occasional scratch, will age gracefully.

Design detail

One of the loveliest things about Carter is how clean-cut its edges are: they give it a sense neatness. For practicality, there are discreet rubber feet underneath so it can be placed on hard flooring, and we added in a bottom shelf to the original stacked coffee table design, so you can make the most of this space.

Just so you know

This piece is made from natural timber, which will expand (slightly) and shrink (just a little) as it responds to the humidity and temperature in your room. We’ve used joinery techniques that’ll help to counteract this, but small changes in your piece are completely natural and to be expected. Just know that, in the very unlikely event that there’s a significant change to the structure, we’ll be here to help.

Taking care of Carter

We’ve put together a series of guides on how best to take care of our pieces, so you can keep them looking as good as the day you first brought them home.
