A closer look at Charlie

Charlie’s a simplified, incredibly comfy take on the English drawing room sofa. Like Long Island, it has a loose, skirted cover that looks especially good in linen, and the same laidback, Belgian-inspired style. If you like that relaxed feel, but want something more tailored, slightly more supportive, and a bit traditional, then go for Charlie.

Frame

The frame on your sofa needs to be able to stand up to years of you sitting and lying (and possibly jumping) on it. It’s the part that, even when the fabric needs a refresh, should still be going strong. That’s why you won’t find anything inside except proper timber, joints and screws, because they’re the way to promise lasting strength and stability.

Filling

Charlie’s for people that like sofas with plenty of bounce and softness, but that they can still sit upright in. It’s the proportion of feathers, down and fibre – for softness – to foam, serpentine springs and elastic webbing – for support – that strikes that balance. There are also two bolster cushions to rest your arms on and two scatter cushions (in the same fabric as the sofa) for extra cosiness.

Proportions

Not too deep, not too slouchy, you can relax back into Charlie or you can sit up straight. And if you’re someone who likes to stretch out across their sofa, you’ll be happy to know that the arms are high enough to lean on, and comfortably padded inside too.

Loose covers

Whether you like to change your mind about the fabric on your sofa, or want one that’s easy to keep clean, a loose-covered style like Charlie’s worth thinking about. You can buy separate covers, and in our Harry and Chloe linens. And because not everyone likes the slightly rumpled style you can get with loose covers, Charlie’s skirt will stay crisp and taut.

Look familiar?

Charlie’s an update on our Charles sofa: a design that had been in our collection for a while, but was due a refresh. Charlie’s got the same, architectural shape to its back, and the same skirted design, it’s just been pared-down, because before it was more suited to traditional homes. Now, it’ll happily live just about anywhere.

The textiles in our fabric library range from pure linen to rich velvet and wool, and each one has its own character. Tone and texture can vary slightly from thread to thread, and expect to see the occasional slub in our linens and pile movement in our velvets. We’ve written an article about the personality behind each of our fabrics so that you can figure out which one best suits your home.

And, rest assured, all the feathers and down in our cushion fillings come from ethical, cruelty-free sources.

Sometimes colour between batches can vary ever-so-slightly. To be on the safe side, we’d advise buying pieces that are being used in the same room in one go.

Taking care of Charlie

We’ve put together this guide on taking care of your upholstered pieces so that they stay looking as beautiful as the day you first brought them home.

We take our delivery service seriously. Neptune transport, Neptune people, Neptune service.

Our white glove service means you’ll have a two-man delivery team. That means no heavy lifting on your part is needed. They’ll take it to your desired spot, assemble it for you and take away the packaging for recycling.

No-quibble returns

We believe that returns should be easy, that’s why we approach them with a ‘no quibble’ mindset. If you decide on the day that it’s not for you then our delivery team can take it away for you there and then, free of charge.

But if you’d rather mull things over, you have 28 days to make up your mind. We do charge a pick-up fee of £29.95 here though, because we’ll need to send our delivery team back out to your address for collection.
