A closer look at Charlotte

Charlotte’s modelled on the classic Chesterfield, with its textural buttons and stitching providing a sense of heritage, though its shape has been made squarer and simpler. It’s the kind of sofa you can imagine passing down the generations.

The frame: in the making

We make our frames using expert joinery techniques that’ll stand up to a lifetime of use. The point where the back legs meet the frame needs to be especially strong – it’ll be taking most of the weight – which is why we use finger joints that securely lock together each piece of timber.

In Charlotte’s back and base are serpentine springs. The cushions have a core of firmer foam, which is then surrounded by feather, down and fibre. To create the tufting detail in the back, we’ve added foam to the upholstery rather than cushions.

Comfort & proportions

Charlotte has a fairly deep seat, ideal for supporting the backs of the knees. The backrest is quite firm but there’s plenty of room for a few soft cushions, and it’s high enough to support the upper back.

Shape & silhouette

Charlotte is made for relaxed conversation. It has arms high enough for leaning and wide enough for perching, and a neat shape that’s perfect in symmetrical arrangements, like a facing pair of sofas.

Design detail

Rows of buttons and diamond-shaped pleating run across the backrest and arms, and over onto the outside. It’s a detail that’s achieved by meticulously folding the fabric by hand before stitching it in place.

Fabric notes

The textiles in our fabric library range from pure linen to rich velvet and wool, and each one has its own character. Tone and texture can vary slightly from thread to thread, and expect to see the occasional slub in our linens and pile movement in our velvets. We’ve written an article about the personality behind each of our fabrics so that you can figure out which one best suits your home.

If you’re ordering Charlotte in one of our patterned textiles, we’ll pare back the buttons and pleating so it doesn’t appear too busy. And if you’ve selected one of our checked wools, we’ll aim to line up each button with a point where two lines meet.

Rest assured, all the feathers and down in our cushion fillings come from ethical, cruelty-free sources.

Sometimes colour between batches can vary ever-so-slightly. To be on the safe side, we’d advise buying pieces that are being used in the same room in one go.

Taking care of Charlotte

We’ve put together this guide on taking care of your upholstered pieces so that they stay looking as beautiful as the day you first brought them home.

We take our delivery service seriously. Neptune transport, Neptune people, Neptune service.

Our white glove service means you’ll have a two-man delivery team. That means no heavy lifting on your part is needed. They’ll take it to your desired spot, assemble it for you and take away the packaging for recycling.

No-quibble returns

We believe that returns should be easy, that’s why we approach them with a ‘no quibble’ mindset. If you decide on the day that it’s not for you then our delivery team can take it away for you there and then, free of charge.

But if you’d rather mull things over, you have 28 days to make up your mind. We do charge a pick-up fee of £29.95 here though, because we’ll need to send our delivery team back out to your address for collection.

New, just opened, and coming very soon...

Not too long ago, a guest at one of our stores described it as being 'extraordinary'. It's the word that we feel best describes them – the look, the feel, the experience. Some are in city-centre locations, some are a little drive out, but they're all designed to feel like a real home, rather than a store.
