A closer look at Isla

There’s something very luxurious about velvet. Whether you use hints of it to contrast with wool and linen or really embrace it with an all-velvet sofa, its sheen and reach-out-and-touch softness will always add richness. For a little more subtlety than traditional silk velvets though, and a more timeless look, ours is made from cotton – it’s not as shiny, but it still has that warm, refined quality.

The textile

90% cotton and 10% polyester. Cotton for softness and breathability, and polyester to make it more hardwearing – though it’ll still mark and crease over time, taking on velvet’s signature character. Isla’s got a high rub count, too, which means it’s more durable.

How it feels

Isla has a short pile that feels very smooth. As well as making it practical for everyday use, this close pile (or nap) also helps to keep the texture of the fabric even, without the rippled look you get with some velvets.

The colour

The colour of velvet can completely change its mood, so Isla comes in several different shades to reflect that. Swallow’s perhaps the most dramatic, almost bordering on black. It’s just blue enough to soften it and make it easier to use.

Where we see it

Isla is designed to work in all kinds of settings, from a sofa to curtains and cushions. Try this shade on upholstery against dark walls where it’ll catch the light to create an inky point of difference; sit it alongside crisp, bright white for an equally strong statement; or make it the fabric that lets brighter colours sing.

Just so you know

There can be some colour variation between different batches of our fabric – we try to make them as small as possible, but it’s something to be expected with natural fibres. If you’re using this fabric more than once in the same room, we recommend ordering as many metres as you need in one go - that way, we can make sure it’s all from the same batch.
