Clemmie's design storyIt’s inspired by what we now call ‘Queen Anne-style furniture’ – this refers to the reign of the last House of Stuart monarch, when upholstered furnishings with curved edges and high-crested backs became popular due to influential Dutch designs and the availability of more fabric varieties. It’s specifically the fiddleback chair that inspired Clemmie with its shape along the top that resembles the outline of a violin. Fast forward to today, and this stately design has been carried through to grand bedrooms and high-end hotels to highlight its magnificent, luxurious look and feel.
The materialsFor us, the best design is that which lasts and lasts – and that’s why we set out to not only create a headboard that’ll endure in terms of style (by taking historical cues and imbuing them with contemporary simplicity) but physically, too. As well as soft foam on the front, Clemmie’s frame is made from solid tulipwood, plywood and oak, and is upholstered in a broad selection of durable fabrics that will stand up to everyday use.
Versatile and flexibleWhile we imagined Clemmie being used with our beds in Chichester (for the painted timber contrast) and Francis (made up in matching fabric), we know you might want to use it for another base you already have at home. So, our headboard comes with sturdy oak struts that’ll attach to most beds, as well as a strong timber French cleat that will allow you to easily hang it on the wall. It’s designed to sit flush with the top of your bed base for a seamless look, so we’ve also added a recessed cut-out section at the bottom of the headboard to accommodate your mattress.
Design detailThe statement curved design that inspired Clemmie is often used in hotels with king and super king beds, so we knew that, if we were to translate the look into a piece for the home, we’d need to come up with a solution that could work for double and single bases too without the grand style overwhelming smaller-sized beds. That’s why the curved edges along the top of the headboard are specifically designed to suit each base size. Our designer, Henry, has achieved this by creating less curves as the headboard width reduces – that way we keep the silhouette intact without it being too busy.
Doing the right thingOur furniture uses wood from the Appalachian Mountains, a region where for every tree harvested or decaying, 2.4 naturally grow back in its place which supports forest regeneration. In fact, this has increased the Appalachian forest by more than 300,000 acres in the last 25 years. The wood then goes to our production house, where a dedicated team is leading us towards becoming the most sustainable home and lifestyle brand by 2030. Not only is the production house powered by highly energy-efficient heat pumps, it also reuses and recycles as many by-products as possible to reduce waste and thereby, do what we can to take some of the pressure off our planet.
