The materials
Chloe is transformed from flax to fabric in Belgium – one of a few countries which has an ideal climate for cultivating the world’s finest linen. As such, the material carries the Belgian Linen label, a quality trademark which guarantees it’s woven in Belgium with at least 85% natural flax fibres (or, in Chloe’s case, 100%). And, it also has the Masters of Linen label, a seal of excellence which certifies that it's been made in Europe and meets high quality standards. You can find more information on Chloe's production story here.
The colour
Chloe’s woven base cloth uses dyes that are approved by REACH, an organisation which regulates the use of harmful chemicals to minimise environmental impact. The fabric is then stonewashed, which takes some of the dye out of the fabric to give it that much-loved characterful look. The fabric comes in subtle shades – this one’s Ash, a pale grey that leans towards blue and goes well with our Nordic paint palette.
Doing the right thing
Not only is this biodegradable fabric made in a carbon neutral weaving mill, our supplier also ensures that all parts of the flax plant are used during production. The shives (fragments that break off inside the plant stems during flax extraction) are used for animal bedding or chipboard, while the long and highest-quality short fibres are used for textiles like our Chloe linen. The fabric also meets OEKO-TEX standard 100, a label exclusively applied to textiles that have been tested and found free of harmful substances.- For orders under £100 (or €100 in Ireland), it’s £6.95 (or €18 in Ireland).

Need to know
There can be some colour variation between different batches of our fabric – we try to make this as minimal as possible, but it’s something to be expected with natural fibres. If you’re using this fabric more than once in the same room, we recommend ordering as many metres as you need in one go – that way, we can aim to make sure it’s all from the same batch.
Slubs are the slightly raised or thicker parts of the thread that you often see on linen fabrics – they’re a completely normal feature of this weave. They give the finished textile personality, texture and interest and show that it’s made from natural fibres.
A note on safety: if you’d like to use this fabric to upholster a piece of furniture yourself, then you should purchase an interliner (which you can find at upholstery and fabric shops) to go with it. This is also known as a barrier cloth which is used underneath the main fabric to ensure that the upholstered furnishing meets fire regulations. Of course, if you order this or any of our fabrics on Neptune pre-upholstered pieces, we’ll use the relevant interliner.
