How it works
Coates casts a soft glow, not a harsh glare. That’s because, unlike most downlights, the bulb faces upwards, back into the light. Look up and you’ll see a chrome-coloured bridge that sits across the middle. That’s what holds the bulb, which then shines onto the mirrored interior, diffusing the light out. We’ve also designed Coates so you won’t get a black spot from the bridge’s shadow as the light falls.
Changing the angle of the light is easy. We’ve designed Coates with double rings that hold onto the bulb, one that angles from side to side and one from front to back. All you need to do is give them a gentle push to shift the light. And when you’ve got them in place, they won’t budge until you move them again yourself.
Material and finish
The steel casing is powder coated to give it a very even and durable finish. It’s white, so will blend into most ceilings, but you can also plaster over it using the optional mesh so only the bulbs peek out (perfect if your ceiling isn’t pure white).
Go ahead and use Coates in any room except bathrooms (it’s doesn’t get on too well with steam). It works when there are other types of lighting in the room too – varying heights of lamps, wall lights and pendants. It’s about creating a lighting scheme that’ll give you a dappled effect.
Coates needed an equally well-designed bulb, which is why, for the ones that come with these lights as standard, we’ve chosen a long-lasting and low-energy LED that’s warm and inviting not cold or too-bright.
