A closer look at Corinium

The Corinium bowl is large and low. At 50cm wide, it makes a striking centrepiece on a console, coffee or dining table. It looks good empty, or use it to display seasonal treasures all year round – like dried seed heads in spring; chocolate eggs at Easter; shells and driftwood in the summer; foraged pine cones in the autumn; and fairy lights and Christmas baubles in winter.

The material

It’s made of earthenware, which has a rustic simplicity that really suits the Corinium pieces. Terracotta and earthenware are the same material. But ‘earthenware’ is used for an object that is made on a potter’s wheel, or is glazed – or both – like tableware. Whereas ‘terracotta’ is used to describe one that’s not made on a potter’s wheel, like a sculpture. Or for unglazed items like flower pots or roof tiles.

The finish

The Corinium bowl  has a crackle glaze so it looks quite old. The glaze has then been ‘antiqued’ which darkens the spaces between the crackles, exaggerating them, so the bowl looks even older. And around the rim, where the glaze has ‘come away’, daubs of green paint create a lichen-like effect .

Design details

For a house to feel like a home, it needs things that are purely decorative. Like a picture or a sculpture that will add life and texture to a room. Our ornaments have lots of different finishes, so they look like they’ve been collected over time, and are all part of your unique story.

Design inspiration

Our Corinium collection was inspired by Roman pots and antique English pottery. It was designed to look like pieces you’ve brought home from lots of different places. So some have bare stone edges; some have distressing; some have antiqued crackle glaze. But they all have their own character, and no two pieces will be exactly the same.
