A closer look at Samuel

Samuel’s irregular stripe pattern is similar to classic ticking fabrics, which were traditionally printed on heavy cotton. For ours, we’ve mixed fine cotton and linen threads – the result’s a strong weave with structure, a bit like cotton canvas. Use it anywhere you want a down-to-earth, slightly rustic feel.

The textile

36.7% linen and 63.3% cotton – a precise mix that we tried and tested until it felt just right. Unbleached linen gives Samuel its heavy weight and structured look, while the cotton adds softness. It’ll feel cool in summer and warm in winter, so you can use it all year round.

A note on slubs

Joining natural fibres together creates raised parts in the thread, known as slubs. They’re not flaws, just part of the fabric’s character.

How it feels

Samuel has the raw, slightly knobbly feel of canvas – it’s sturdier than some of our softer linens, but still has the same slubs and raised threads. The cotton adds a little movement, so it’s not stiff.

The colour

Rust and cream stripes are woven into the fabric, not printed on top, which keeps the focus on its naturally grainy texture. Both shades have pink undertones that echo the warmth of unbleached linen. And because the stripes are widely spaced, you can easily use Samuel just like a plain neutral.

Where we see it

As it’s one of our sturdier fabrics, Samuel works best for upholstery and curtains. The wide, subtle stripes add a hint of pattern to a sofa, if you want something a little more interesting than a plain. And on curtains, the stripes help to make a room feel taller.

Just so you know

There can be some colour variation between different batches of our fabric – we try to make them as small as possible, but it’s something to be expected with natural fibres. If you’re using this fabric more than once in the same room, we recommend ordering as many metres as you need in one go - that way, we can make sure it’s all from the same batch.
