How to make natural firelighters

How to make natural firelighters

A small and simple crafting project for winter, these natural firelighters are easy to make with just a handful of ingredients you probably already have tucked in a kitchen cupboard. Use them to subtly scent your own fires this winter, or wrap them up in a jar to give as a present.

What you’ll need

A cupcake tin
Cupcake cases
Tealights
Herbs and spices, such as rosemary, star anise, cinnamon sticks, cloves and pink peppercorns

What to do

  1. Fill the cupcake tin with the cases and preheat your oven to 180°C.
  2. Pop the tealights out of their foil or plastic cups and place just the wax and wick in each of the cupcake cases.
  3. Warm in the oven for a few minutes to melt the wax.
  4. Sprinkle your chosen herbs and spices around the wick and then leave until the wax sets hard again.
  5. Once set, remove the paper case from around the firelighters and, if you’re giving them as a present, pile them into a jar and tie with a ribbon and tag.
  6. To use, simply tuck in amongst the kindling in your fireplace or firepit and light the wick.
