The materialsHighgate in Silver Birch is created from solid sections of tulipwood. We use this timber when we know we want to paint on top of it as it’s renowned for its smooth surface and minimal knots, which gives the paint an even finish.
The finishWe’ve chosen this muted grey Silver Birch colourway because it has a distinctly Scandinavian feel – it draws on Gustavian Swedish style furniture that’s well known for its elegance and understated colour palette. But you don’t have to stick to this hue if you think another shade would suit your interior scheme better – make this floor lamp your own by choosing one of over 28 bespoke paint colours from our edited collection.
Design detailAt 120cm in height, this floor lamp is a little shorter than standard versions, but this means it won’t dominate the room and will slot neatly next to a sofa or armchair. Its base also takes up minimal floor space at 25cm, so it’s ideal for more compact areas, and it has a soft, felted bottom that will prevent floor marks if you move it around the room. The lamp also features over two metres of vintage-inspired brown fabric flex and has an inline switch to make it quick and easy to turn on and off.
The perfect pairingYou can couple this lamp with any shade (provided it has an E27 bulb fitting), but we’ve narrowed it down to two that we think go best with Highgate’s tall, slim design. Our Oliver and Henry shades in Warm White suit this floor lamp in size, style and material. Their rounded shapes match well with the turned lamp body and they’re a mix of cotton and linen for a fine but slightly slubbed texture. Oliver is a wide ‘empire’ shape that’s quite traditional, whereas the slightly sloped ‘French drum’ Henry has a more modern feel. In Warm White, they’ll both diffuse light more evenly around the room than a thicker fabric and they’ll also bring warmth and an ambient atmosphere to your home.
Doing the right thingThis lamp is made with wood from the Appalachian Mountains, a region where, for every tree harvested or decaying, 2.4 naturally grow back in its place which contributes to forest regeneration.

You’ll need an E27 bulb for this lamp. We recommend using an LED bulb as these have a far lower environmental impact and are cool to the touch, so they won’t scorch shades (or fingers!), as opposed to halogen or tungsten bulbs that generate a lot of heat. We also recommend that the maximum strength of your bulb should be no more than 8W LED. As standard, this light comes with a UK three-pin plug and a Europlug adaptor. All your lamp should need to keep it clean is a simple dust down with a soft cloth. Should it get marked, you can also use a damp e-cloth to wipe it. If you’d like to repaint your lamp at any point, we recommend doing so with a water-based eggshell as that’s what we’ll have used for its original colour. For a full step by step on repainting, take a look at our care guides (you’ll find it in ‘volume one: timber’). If you’d like to choose your own shade, we recommend you choose one with a base measurement of around 35–45cm wide to suit the Highgate lamp.
