Like all natural materials, there will be variations in terms of colour and texture in your Whittington hemp rug. In fact, it’s a detail that we love as it makes each rug unique. There might also be some shedding of the fibres to begin with, but that’ll decrease in time.
A closer look at Whittington
Hemp is one of the strongest natural fibres out there, which is why we’ve chosen it over jute (more usually used to make carpets). Like other bast fibres such as linen, it grows without the need for chemicals, making it a more environmentally-friendly choice than cotton. And, as it’s extracted from a plant, it’s a vegan-friendly alternative to wool (if a little bit more rugged in texture).
Whittington has a simple loop pile weave, which feels firm underfoot and is easy to clean with a vacuum. It’s relatively fine (chunkier than Cullingworth but less so than Elgin), which is both a practical, as it won’t catch easily, and aesthetic choice, making Whittington less of a statement rug and more of a background design that you can easily layer onto with sheepskins or patterned textiles.
Not too light, not too dark and, most importantly, not too yellow, Whittington is a subdued mid-honey colour with slightly silvery tones, a little like the natural oak pieces in our collection. It pairs well with just about any colour scheme.
The edges of this rug are very simply finished with overcast (or serged) stitching – hemp yarn tightly wrapped around the sides to stop fraying. It leaves Whittington with a slim, neat and discreet border. We haven’t added a backing to this rug so you can flip it over if you like, but we’d recommend you use it with a separate non-slip mat, which are readily available.
