Tall, slim, glass-fronted Shepton is our curio cabinet for when floorspace is tight – although its use goes beyond just displaying collected finds. It's been made even more versatile with the addition of four removeable wine crosses – now you can convert its shelves into a home for your favourite tipple with this easy, slot-in divider. Our go-to shade for the cabinet and wine crosses is Lily, but you can choose from any of our other water-based, eggshell paints for its interior and exterior too, whether it be a muted hue or statement shade.

The materials: tulipwood

We use tulipwood because it’s strong, smooth and has very few knots, which is the ideal surface for painting. But when it comes to the application, we know that not all furniture and every colour needs the same method, so that’s why we vary the number of coats and use hand-finishing techniques specific to each piece.

Form and function

Its proportions might be elegantly slim, but that doesn’t mean Shepton is a wobbly, delicate piece. We’ve used clever joinery with the way the legs form part of the sides of the cabinet and height adjustable feet to create a sturdy frame (both useful features for houses with uneven floors). And, we've included secure zig-zag shelf supports which can take plenty of weight – the shelves are adjustable too so you can make the cabinet your own. Each wine divider is removable and uses a cross lap joint which is secured by two vertical sides for additional strength – this feature also helps to hold the wine bottles centrally in the cabinet. Every cross can carry a significant amount of weight too – up to 30kg which equates to 25 bottles, to be exact – so you can rest assured that your much-loved beverages are housed securely.

The hardware

We’ve chosen our black-bronze hardware for Shepton, a finish that combines bronze’s warmth with a statement blackened overlay. With use, it’ll gradually take on more patina. The handle on the door is our elliptical Barlow, chosen because its elongated shape suits the cabinet’s proportions, and we’ve paired it with matching hinges and magnetic catches.

Design detail

Personality-wise, Shepton is quite a simple, timeless piece. But we’ve added a subtle extra detail with a stop-chamfer edge down the sides to emphasise the shape of the feet and add a touch more refinement. Not only does this add visual softness to the cabinet frame, it also makes it more durable as the corners will be less likely to chip with occasional knocks and bumps over time.

Doing the right thing

This long-lasting piece is created with wood from the Appalachian Mountains, a region where for every tree harvested or decaying, 2.4 naturally grow back in its place which contributes to forest regeneration. The wood then goes to our production house, where a dedicated team is leading us towards becoming the most sustainable home and lifestyle brand by 2030. Not only is the production house powered by highly energy-efficient heat pumps, it also reuses and recycles as many by-products as possible to reduce waste and thereby, do what we can to take some of the pressure off our planet. As well as the wood, our paints are made with both people and planet in mind, too. They're water-based, extremely low in VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds, which release harmful chemicals and unpleasant odours), are suitable for plant-based lifestyles, and they've never been tested on animals. Each pot is made in the UK by our trusted partners who have been mixing paint since 1740.
