Rechargeable table lamps that bring a soft, dimmable light to the places a plug can't reach, from the middle of the dining table to a bookshelf. For lamps that stay put, explore our table lamps.

A rechargeable table lamp answers a question most homes have: where do you put a light when there's no plug nearby? The middle of a long dining table, a kitchen island, the back of an open shelf, a windowsill or a reading chair stranded away from the wall. With the battery hidden inside, a rechargeable lamp sits wherever it's needed and moves on when the room changes, with no lead to tuck behind the furniture.
Our collection falls into two families. The Hanover is a cordless lamp made to look like a traditional one, with ribbed and fluted Regency-inspired detailing beneath a tapered shade. It comes in two heights, small at 46cm and tall at 62cm. Choose it where the lamp should read as part of the scheme, not simply as a light.
The second family is smaller and softer. Both designs stand 32cm tall on a brushed brass base, one with a shade of gathered linen and one handwoven from natural rattan, each with a scalloped edge that sends the light gently downwards. They're light enough to carry from room to room in one hand, and they bring texture to a surface rather than formality.
Whichever you choose, every design dims, so one lamp can glow brightly through supper and softly at the end of the evening.
A cordless lamp is only worth having if it looks at home switched off. The Hanover is made from an iron and zinc alloy for strength and longevity, which gives it the weight to stand as steadily as a mains lamp. Its battery is concealed in the base, and its LED ring bulb sits on the underside of the shade, so nothing about it announces the missing cable. It gives 300 lumens of warm white light at 2700K, and its bulb, rated for 30,000 hours, is replaceable rather than sealed in.
The linen and rattan designs take their character from the materials. Gathered linen and handwoven rattan both diffuse the light, so the glow reads as soft texture rather than a bright point. Each has a removable magnetic bulb that dims at a touch and charges by USB, leaving the shade itself free of switches and sockets.
That freedom is the point. A cordless lamp gives you what our design director, Fred, calls 'the flexibility and freedom of lighting all corners of a room, inside and out.' These are lamps designed to meet that brief without looking like a compromise.
On a full charge, the Hanover cordless lamp runs for up to 12 hours, a little less if you keep it at full brightness, and takes about 5 hours to recharge through the micro-USB port on its base. The smaller linen and rattan lamps run for around 6 hours, up to 7 on the linen, and charge via USB through their removable magnetic bulb. That comfortably covers a long dinner and the rest of the evening. A simple routine is to charge the lamp during the day and use it after dark. Dimming it stretches the charge further, which is worth remembering for a late supper outside on a summer evening.
Some can. The Hanover is rated IP44, which means it's protected against splashing water, so it can be carried out to a terrace or garden table for the evening and brought back in afterwards. Our design director, Fred, suggests pairing cordless lamps like the Hanover with candles in hurricane jars to light an alfresco dining table, keeping the light low and close to the table rather than relying on harsh permanent fittings. The linen and rattan lamps are indoor designs. They can join you outside on a dry, still evening, but shouldn't be left out overnight, in rain or in bad weather. For permanent lighting outside, see our outdoor lighting collection.
Go by sight lines. On a dining table, a lamp should light the table without blocking the view across it, which is why the 32cm linen and rattan lamps and the 46cm small Hanover sit comfortably in the centre. On a long table, two small lamps spaced along its length give a more even glow than one. A kitchen island or an alcove has more height to fill, and that's where the 62cm tall Hanover earns its place: it has the presence to read as a lamp from across an open-plan room, and its four brightness levels take it from early evening to a late supper. Our design director, Fred, also suggests a small cordless lamp for an empty worktop corner, where there's rarely a socket in the right place.
Yes, and it solves the familiar problem of a bedside socket in the wrong place or a cable trailing across the floor. The 32cm linen and rattan lamps suit most bedside tables: they're compact, light to move and dim with a touch, which is easy to find in the dark. Their gathered linen and handwoven rattan shades send the light softly downwards, so the glow is gentle enough for winding down without lighting the whole room. For a larger bedside table or a chest of drawers, the small Hanover at 46cm gives a more traditional silhouette and four brightness settings. Charge it during the day, and it's ready by bedtime.
