Oak and painted sideboards designed to earn their place in any room

eChoosing a sideboard for your home

A sideboard earns its place in a room by doing more than storing things. Used well, it creates a surface for display, a visual anchor for the wall behind it and a considered piece of furniture that holds its character whether the room is in daily use or dressed for an occasion. Neptune's sideboard collection spans solid oak and painted designs, offering a range of proportions from low and wide to tall and compact, so the right piece can be found for a dining room, sitting room, landing or kitchen without compromising on the quality of the design.

The oak sideboards in the range bring the natural grain, warmth and strength that solid timber offers, each one protected with IsoGuard® to defend the surface without masking the beauty of the wood beneath. The painted designs use smooth tulipwood for their exterior finish, chosen for its perfectly smooth surface that carries paint well.

Most painted sideboards in the collection are available in 48 paint options, making it straightforward to choose a finish that either disappears into the room or makes a considered statement within it. For those who want a wooden sideboard that doubles as a display piece, the glass-fronted Farlow offers an exposed oak interior behind its painted frame, designed to hold and show treasured objects, tableware and books on its adjustable zig-zag shelves.

For those who want storage that can grow and change with the home, the Chawton collection takes a different approach entirely. Designed with a modular philosophy, it can begin as a sideboard and expand over time into a dresser, bookcase or full-wall cabinet. Chawton is built with the sustainable philosophy that it can fit any room, suit any style, and reinvent itself as your life and home evolve.

Solid oak and wooden sideboards, built to last

Neptune sideboards are made without MDF or chipboard. It is a founding principle that runs through every piece Neptune makes, and one that co-founder John Sims-Hilditch has held to since the beginning. The reason is straightforward: those materials do not have the longevity required for traditional jointing techniques, and Neptune's intention has always been to make furniture built to last one hundred years. In their place, solid oak and tulipwood are used for the structural elements, with hardwood ply for panel work, all combined using heritage joinery techniques that have proved their strength over generations.

On some designs, drawers are constructed with traditional dovetail joints and fitted on soft-close concealed runners, a level of precision and quality that a less considered approach would not deliver. Where mortise-and-tenon joinery is used, it is because it is the most reliable and elegant solution available, not the fastest. Shelving adjusts on Neptune's traditional zig-zag system across the range, moving simply and securely rather than relying on cheap metal pins. Height-adjustable feet are concealed behind the skirting on selected designs where uneven flooring might otherwise be a problem.

The finish behind every painted and solid oak sideboard

Oak surfaces across the range are protected with IsoGuard®, a penetrative treatment that defends the timber from water and staining while leaving the wood looking and feeling naturally beautiful. The painted designs are hand-finished in a customisable eggshell, with up to 48 paint options available. Where water-based, low-VOC paints are used, they are chosen with both finish quality and the environment in mind.

Every Neptune sideboard carries the Neptune lifetime guarantee on indoor furniture, a commitment made possible by the decisions taken at every stage of the design and manufacturing process. The right decisions around materials, design and engineering are what make furniture that lasts indefinitely. A Neptune sideboard is simply built to stay.
