5 seater sofas, in a line or around a corner

Choosing the right 5 seater sofa

A five-seater sofa is the size at which Neptune's range changes shape. At the smaller sizes, the choice is between straight designs. At five seats, one design carries on in a straight line, and the others turn a corner.

The straight one is the Olivia. At 245cm wide and 110cm deep, it gives 200cm of that width over to the seat rather than the arms, under a 43cm seat height and a 53cm double-arched backrest. Turned oak legs on brass castors lift the frame clear of the floor, which stops a sofa of this width reading as a solid block along a wall.

The corner designs here are Long Islands, and they take the same five places around a corner instead of along a single wall. The Long Island five-seater corner sofa is square in plan at 260cm by 260cm; the five-seater L-shaped corner sofa runs 220cm across the front with a 290cm return down the adjoining side. The Long Islands sit deeper in the seat than the Olivia, at 70cm against 65cm, and they wear loose linen covers rather than fixed upholstery. Which of them suits a room, and which hand it needs, is settled on our corner sofas page.

The same designs run narrower through our four-seater sofas and three-seater sofas.

What the fifth seat costs

The Olivia is made at four seats as well as five, which makes the price of the fifth seat unusually easy to read. The four-seater is 225cm wide with 180cm of seat. The five-seater is 245cm wide with 200cm. Everything else is the same: 110cm deep, 88cm tall, a 43cm seat height, and 65cm of seat depth.

So the fifth seat costs 20cm of floor, and every one of those 20cm becomes seat. The arms do not grow with the sofa, which is why the extra width reads as somewhere to sit rather than as bulk.

What it does not buy is a wider straight sofa. A single frame stops at 245cm here, and the straight designs that go wider are built in sections instead. Past that point, the range changes what the sofa is rather than how wide it is, which is why the alternative at five seats is a corner.

How our 5 seater sofas are made

Every design here begins as a kiln-dried tulipwood frame, assembled and upholstered by hand and held with traditional reinforced halving joints. Serpentine springs carry the seat, and every cushion is built around a foam core wrapped in feather and fibre. The Olivia's turned legs are finished in Natural Oak or Darkened Oak, and it is offered in 25 fabrics, compared with 15 on the Long Island designs.

The frame and springs are guaranteed for life, with three years on the fabric and cushion inners.
