Pillar candles

A pillar candle is a freestanding candle designed to burn evenly without a container. Pillar candles are valued for their clean shape and steady flame, making them easy to layer and style. Available as small pillar candles, large pillar candles and tall pillar candles, they work beautifully on tables, mantelpieces and shelves, either grouped together or used as a single, quiet focal point.

Pillar candles should always be placed on a heat resistant, stable surface. A candle plate, stone dish or glass base will protect furniture and catch any softened wax. Small pillar candles suit compact holders, while large pillar candles and tall pillar candles benefit from wider bases that keep them well balanced and visually grounded.

Burn time varies depending on size and environment. Small pillar candles offer shorter burn times of around 45 hours, ideal for occasional use, while large pillar candles and tall pillar candles are designed to burn for over 80 hours, perfect for long evenings. For the best performance, allow the wax to melt evenly across the top on each burn to support a longer, more consistent lifespan.

Many pillar candles can be used inside a hurricane vase, provided the proportions are right. Small pillar candles suit narrower vessels, while large pillar candles and tall pillar candles need enough clearance around the sides and top for heat to disperse safely. Always ensure the candle sits securely on a flat base and does not touch the glass as it burns.
