Choosing the right side table for your space

Few pieces of furniture work as quietly or as constantly as a side table. Lamp stand, drinks surface, book rest; it earns its place beside a sofa or armchair by making the space around it feel more settled and complete. As our design director Fred notes, ideally, you should have a side table on either side of a sofa, or one next to a chair, keeping styles consistent rather than mixing too many different materials across the room.

The right choice depends on the character of the space. For rooms built around natural textures and warm tones, the oak designs sit most naturally. The Edinburgh's ring-turned column supports and understated undershelf suits more traditional living rooms where a sense of permanence is wanted. The Thornbury and Chalford both take their inspiration from Edwardian design, with recessed tops and pedestal bases that introduce a more refined, sculptural quality beside a sofa or armchair. The Frome takes a more contemporary, Regency-inspired approach, with a woven rattan undershelf and brushed oak finish available in natural oak or warm black.

For more contemporary schemes, the Keswick's brass frame and glass shelf bring a refined Art Deco-influenced quality to a sofa side table, while the Coniston's tiered tempered glass suits spaces where lightness is the priority. Solid oak, crafted to last

The majority of Neptune's side table collection is built from solid oak throughout, with no MDF or chipboard anywhere in the construction. Where turning techniques are used, as on the Henley's tripod legs and the Edinburgh's column supports, they reflect a tradition of English furniture making that goes back centuries. The Thornbury takes this further, with mortise-and-tenon joinery confirmed in the construction, a technique chosen for its structural integrity rather than speed of production.

Each oak side table is finished with IsoGuard®, which penetrates the timber rather than sitting on top of it, leaving the natural grain, warmth, and texture of the oak fully visible. Where darkened oak is offered, as across the Thornbury and Chalford, it is a finish applied to the same solid oak construction rather than a different material; the grain remains visible and the piece ages in the same way. The Frome takes a different approach, with a heavily brushed and lightly painted warm black finish that celebrates the natural grain of the oak rather than concealing it.

The most important consideration is height. Ideally, the tabletop should sit level with or just below the arm of the sofa or chair it sits beside, so everything on it is within easy reach. For compact spaces or beside an armchair, a smaller side table such as the Thornbury or Chalford pedestal works well without crowding the room. For a sofa where you want more surface area, the Edinburgh square or the Aldwych tray offers a more generous top. Leave enough clear space around any side table so the room feels easy to move through. A side table should add to the sense of comfort in the space, not reduce it.
