Have you ever wondered what actually goes into the construction of a chair? Our new Stirling chair’s pared-back silhouette tells all. Crafted from solid oak, it reveals the thread linking all of Neptune’s furniture collections: a commitment to natural materials, heritage craftsmanship, and comfort.
Neptune’s lead designer, Mike Charlton, explains the creation process: ‘Our aim was to make a very simple chair with a small footprint but highlight all the craftsmanship within it.’ The most distinctive feature? The sculpted, supportive backrest, precisely engineered for ergonomic comfort, that showcases four, exposed dowel joints. The piece’s curving lines ‘are very tactile, so that all of the areas where you engage with the chair feel soft to touch.’ This flow continues through to the tapered legs, which highlight the timber’s natural beauty and structural integrity, fixed by traditional mortise-and-tenon joints.
The Stirling’s neat surface area is achieved by the hidden ‘X’ frame, which features two crossing beams supporting the seat, forgoing the need for a classic – and more visible – square frame. The design’s attention to detail also demonstrates Neptune’s focus on timeless British craftsmanship. Complete with traditional joinery techniques and our Natural Oak IsoGuard® finish, it is a chair made for everyday comfort and durability. ‘For a more mid-century accent, you can opt for a leather seat pad,’ says Mike. ‘The ‘recessed part lets the leather pad sink into the chair – it’s very deliberate.’
Recalling traditional dining and desk chairs, the Stirling can be seamlessly pulled into any room or table arrangement, its compact profile suiting smaller rooms and round or contemporary tables in particular.
