A desk is a simple working surface, often with a drawer or light storage, designed for writing, emails and everyday tasks. A workstation is more self-contained. In our case, the Chichester workstation conceals a compact home office within a Georgian-inspired dresser, with a pull-out work surface, shelving and cable management, so you can close it away when the day is done.

Start with where the desk will live and how you will use it. A small desk or writing desk suits bedrooms and living areas where you want the room to feel calm. If you need storage and surface space for equipment, a workstation can keep everything organised. A vanity desk works well in dressing areas as a dual-purpose piece. Consider a wooden or oak desk to add warmth and texture, especially in softer schemes.

As a guide, allow at least 90 to 120cm width for a laptop and notebook, and 120 to 160cm if you use a monitor or need space for paperwork. Depth matters too, around 50 to 60cm keeps screens and working distance comfortable. Many of our designs sit within this practical range. As an example, the Chichester writing desk is 115cm wide, and the Chichester workstation includes a pull-out surface at 107cm wide.

Pair your desk or workstation with a supportive desk chair and a table lamp to keep the setup comfortable and well-lit. Storage furniture such as bookcases, drawers or shelving helps keep the surface clear, especially in shared spaces.
