When it comes to painted timber, we use tulipwood – a strong and resilient hardwood. Its fine, almost knot-free grain makes it perfectly suited to a painted finish, so you get the best of both worlds – strength and smoothness.
Not every piece of furniture and every colour of paint needs the same process – a ‘one finish suits all’ approach won’t ever give you the best result possible. That’s why we vary the number of coats and use both hand-painted and spray-painted techniques depending on what that shade requires.
The bed base
Chichester’s sides sit snugly underneath the mattress to conceal the timber slats beneath and so it asks for a little less room. It also means you’re not as likely to bump your shins when walking around it in the dark.
Beech is used to make the slats on each of our beds because it’s flexible and reliable. They’re sprung, which means they curve upwards to give a little extra bounce underneath the mattress. They’re held in place with discreet, cream-coloured clips. Beds larger than a single have an extra support in the centre too.
Considered details in Chichester’s design, like scalloped corners on the base, and grooves on each gently-tapered leg, are those touches that make it simple and classic rather than plain. Hidden at its back are subtle bolts that hold your chosen headboard in place.
If you prefer the look of a valance over the wooden frame of this bed base, we’ve created our Alice valance – with neat box-pleat edges and available in a variety of fabrics – to fit perfectly. It’s also easy to connect this base to any of our headboards, and there are both classic and contemporary, understated and dramatic styles to choose from.
We believe that returns should be easy, which is why we approach them with a ‘no quibble’ mindset. And, you’ll also have 28 days to do so – just in case you need time to mull things over.
When it comes to designs upholstered in a made-to-order fabric or painted in a bespoke colour, there’s also a 20% returns/cancellation fee. We’d love to not have to charge a penny for this, but as they’re made just for you, we can’t always guarantee that we’ll be able to sell them again.
