Choosing a garden bench for your outdoor space
A garden bench serves the outdoor space differently to a garden chair. Where chairs define individual places, a bench creates a shared one, drawing people together along one side of a table, or offering a place to pause at the edge of a terrace or beside a path. The decision of which garden bench to choose comes down to two things: how you want to use the space, and what character you want the bench to bring to it.
Neptune's garden bench collection offers two distinct material approaches. Solid teak benches bring natural warmth and a relaxed, settled quality that suits both dining settings and standalone placement in quieter corners of the garden. The Pembrey is the most contemporary of the teak designs, a clean-lined backless bench that tucks neatly under a matching dining table when not in use, keeping patios and terraces feeling uncluttered. The Harmondsworth takes a more architectural approach, its sculptural legs and broad seat giving it a grounded presence that works as a dining bench or as a freestanding seat in its own right. The Stanway is the natural choice for outdoor dining, its A-frame legs and simple proportions bringing a relaxed, modern country feel to longer tables and larger gatherings. For those drawn to a more decorative, heritage-inspired character, the Cheltenham outdoor bench is crafted from galvanised steel, its intricate fretwork and sweeping armrests inspired by the Regency ironwork of its namesake town. One of the most enduring designs in the Neptune garden collection, it has been a fixture of the range for two decades.
For outdoor dining, a garden bench pairs naturally with a matching garden dining table, seating more people without filling the space with additional chairs. Used alone, it creates a considered spot in the garden that feels intentional rather than incidental, a place to sit with a view rather than somewhere that simply appeared.
Solid teak and galvanised steel garden benches, built for the outdoors
The choice of material for an outdoor bench is not purely aesthetic. It determines how the bench weathers, how much maintenance it requires, and how long it will last. Neptune's teak garden benches are crafted from solid teak, a tropical hardwood chosen specifically for outdoor use because of its naturally high oleoresin content. Those natural oils make teak inherently resistant to water, pests and the drying effects of sun and wind, giving it a longevity that most outdoor timbers cannot match. As co-founder John Sims-Hilditch explains, Neptune selects timbers based on their durability, tactility and beauty, always choosing the right material for the right purpose. For outdoor furniture, teak has always been that material.
Each teak bench is treated with IsoGuard® oil, a natural linseed-oil-based treatment that helps protect the timber from staining, drying and oxidising without masking the character of the wood beneath. Over time, untreated teak develops a silvered patina as the surface weathers. With IsoGuard® oil, that ageing process is managed rather than prevented, preserving the bench's natural beauty across the seasons. The silver patina that develops over time does not affect the structural strength of the timber.
The Cheltenham takes a different approach to outdoor durability. Its galvanised steel frame and slatted seat are designed to withstand the elements without the maintenance that timber requires, while the slatted construction allows efficient drainage after rain. Where the teak benches age with warmth and character, the Cheltenham holds its form and finish with quiet dependability, season after season.
