Choosing the right oak dining chair
Each design in our oak dining chairs collection has its own origin. The Wardley takes its ladder back from Shaker style, and a Shaker-inspired swallowtail joint secures the backrest. The Wycombe is our take on the Sussex chair made by Morris & Co. around the turn of the 20th century. The Suffolk is based on an antique original, with turned spheres across the back. The Tilbury is inspired by a chair you might find on the porch of a Mediterranean home. The Borough brings a mid-century Scandinavian shape to the table, with a contoured backrest that supports the curve of your spine, and the Stirling shows its craft openly, with exposed dowel joints on the backrest.
Choosing the seat, finish and size of your oak dining chair
- A solid wooden seat: the Wardley, Suffolk and Stirling have no fabric, so spills wipe away.
- A woven seat: the Wycombe has a traditional paper rush seat that is naturally water-resistant, and the Tilbury is an oak and rattan dining chair with a hand-woven seat.
- Upholstered oak dining chairs: the Borough has a foam-filled inset cushion in leather, linen, boucle or cotton velvet, which can be reupholstered in years to come. The Stirling also comes with a tan leather seat. For fully upholstered designs, see our upholstered dining chairs.
- Light oak dining chairs: the Wardley, Wycombe, Tilbury, Borough and Stirling all come in natural oak, our lightest finish.
- Seasoned oak: the Suffolk is finished in seasoned oak, which gives the timber a subtle silvered look.
- Painted: the Suffolk also comes hand-finished in eggshell paint, in Silver Birch or painted to order in other Neptune colours.
- Dark oak dining chairs: the Borough also comes in darkened oak, with a tan leather or olive cotton velvet seat.
- Seat height: our oak dining chairs have a seat height of about 46 to 47cm. On a 74 to 75cm high table, such as the Arundel or Wycombe, that leaves 27 to 29cm between the seat and the tabletop.
- Oak carver chairs: the Wardley Carver and Tilbury Carver sit at the ends of the table, with more in dining chairs with arms.
- An oak dining chair set: every design is sold individually, so you can mix carvers and side chairs in one set.
How our oak dining chairs are made
Our oak dining chairs are made from solid oak, and traditional joinery holds each frame together. The Suffolk, Tilbury, Borough and Stirling use mortise-and-tenon joints, and the Wardley uses foxtail joints at the legs for strength and stability.
Each chair is protected with IsoGuard®, our oil finish that soaks into the timber so the grain stays visible. It repels water, so wipe spills away promptly. Many designs also have glides under the feet to protect your floors.
Every oak dining chair carries Neptune's lifetime guarantee.
For a matching set, pair within a collection. The Wycombe chair is made to sit with the Wycombe dining table, and the Borough chair with the Borough table. See all our oak dining tables to find the right match.
