The materialsThere are lots of reasons to love lambswool. It’s strong, hypoallergenic and it happens to be insulating and breathable too, so despite being thought of as a fabric only for cold months, it’ll also keep you cool in summer. As for its handle, lambswool is the yarn gathered from a sheep’s first shearing, so it’s very fine, warm and lightweight – it’s the perfect accessory for adding softness to a room.
Doing the right thingThe initial design for this piece was developed in Bristol and hand-woven on a loom using traditional techniques. The mill is part of The Bristol Cloth project, which is committed to preserving traditional British weaving, and it’s also taken steps to make the process more sustainable by implementing carbon neutral electricity and using 100% renewable energy. Alongside this, the mill aligns itself with the South West England Fibreshed initiative, which focuses on using locally produced, natural resources in a sustainable way to minimise waste in the textiles industry. Once the final design has been settled on by the mill in Bristol, it then travels to Yorkshire where it goes into production at a larger mill. The wool is dyed with colours that are REACH compliant – this scheme regulates and minimises the use of harmful chemicals. The fabric also meets OEKO-TEX standard 100, a label exclusively applied to textiles that have been tested and found free of damaging substances.
