Blakeney Blue: a hue with history

Blakeney Blue: a hue with history

Article from Stories magazine Vol.24. Written by Victoria Sait.

A distinctive shade of blue catches the eye along the coastline of Norfolk: a deep, almost teal shade that washes over the Blakeney Lifeboat Station. It’s a mark of history.

Built in 1862 and reconstructed in 1898, the iconic Blakeney Lifeboat Station may no longer be a working station, but this popular visitor centre for the National Trust still attracts attention for its striking colour and characterful shape, standing like a beacon on Blakeney Point.

A traditional colour found along the Norfolk coastline, deep blue is commonly used on maritime buildings for its durability and visibility. The shade helps isolate these structures so they stand out against the grey shingle and saltmarsh landscape as recognisable landmarks for approaching ships.

Our own deep blue takes its name from the Norfolk village where the lifeboat station stands. Balanced between teal and navy, Blakeney Blue offers a fresh yet solid take on this shade. Uplifting rather than austere, it pairs beautifully with soft whites for an elegant coastal scheme. While the Blakeney Lifeboat Station may be weathered in tone these days, our paint shade is striking, whether colour-drenched on walls and woodwork or used to paint furniture.

Blue is a popular choice in interiors due to its strong connection to nature. From sky to sea, blue is all around us and provides a grounding influence, evoking a sense of calm and stability. Incorporating blue into the home taps into these natural associations, creating peaceful environments.

This season, we’ve used Blakeney Blue on furniture as a contrast in more neutral rooms, subtly replicating the lifeboat station’s distinctive impact against the Norfolk coastline. We have also introduced the shade through accessories like our iconic Ella tumblers and Blyton candles, and as a highlight in new cushions, textiles, frames and artwork. However you chose to introduce an element of Blakeney Blue into your home, it is sure to bring with it a calming touch.
