How to make a Christmas wreath

A Christmas wreath hung on the front door evokes a warm welcome during the festive season. Over the years wreaths have become more popular with interior decorating too, from hanging on bedroom doors to being laid as a table centrepiece, it’s a tradition we always return to. Looking for ideas to make your own evergreen Christmas wreath? Our guide will help you create a life-like festive wreath using stems from our faux-foliage collection, so you can hang it inside your home year after year.

What you will need to make your Christmas wreath at home:

  • Wreath base
  • Individual stems
  • Scissors
  • Florist wire
  • Green twine
  • Fir cones, dried oranges and cinnamon sticks (optional)

1. Gather your tools, stems and foliage

You will need a classic wreath base to start with, as well as individual stems, scissors and florist wire. Christmas decorations such as natural fir cones, dried oranges and cinnamon sticks look beautiful as additional decorations and help create a festive aroma. Consider these as the finishing flourishes you can replace each year.

2. Think about your Christmas wreath design

Take the base of your wreath and select the stems you would like to add. Consider whether you’d like a more minimalist, traditional green design or maybe you want to add some festive sparkle with glitter stems and frozen berries. Wire stems are easy to bend so that you can weave and tie them into a display, but you can also cut the wires down to size too.

3. Add your chosen stems to the base

Take small bunches of the faux stems, mixing them up and overlapping as you go to avoid gaps, and secure these to the base using the florist wire. The best way to use the wire is to place it directly through the base of the wreath and out the other side, bend it over the new stems and return back through to hide the ends.

4. Consider how to add texture and colour

For a fuller wreath we recommend using Eucalyptus Red Box Spray which has hints of warm russet for additional colour. To add different textures, try the Faux Bay Berry Spray or Faux Holly Berry Spray, which gives a classic festive touch to your wreath.

5. Keep an eye on the placement of stems

Continue until you have a balance of new stems and the original wreath base. Check your wreath as you build it up to make sure you have maintained a good shape.

6. Add scented decorations to finish

To finish, tie together cinnamon sticks or dried orange slices with wire and add these with equal spacing to the wreath using florist wire and add a loop of green twine to the reverse, ready to hang.
