Choosing handmade Christmas decorations
Handmade Christmas decorations tend to be chosen a few at a time rather than in matching sets, and that changes how a tree comes together. Instead of dressing it in one go, you build a collection, adding pieces over the years until the branches tell a story of their own.
Most of the pieces here are hand-painted papier-mâché baubles, made in one small round size, which is what lets them mix so freely. The designs divide into figures, foliage and pattern, with Father Christmas, a nutcracker and a sleigh among the first, sprigs of holly and mistletoe in the second, and simple painted pinstripes, bows, swirls and stripes in the third. Most pair red or a deep merlot with a white ground, so any mix of them still reads as one scheme.
Alongside them sit felt figures, stitched or beaded by hand, which bring a softer texture to the same branch. You will find more about those on our felt Christmas decorations page.
Hand-painted baubles, made in papier-mâché
Traditional papier-mâché is paper and paste, built up and left to set into a light, rigid shell. Our baubles are crafted in that style by skilled artisans, and the design is then painted on by hand, so every line and figure is placed with a brush rather than printed. A small painted metal loop sits at the top, threaded with a white ribbon to tie onto the branch.
Painting by hand means each bauble differs a little from the next: a stripe slightly finer, a berry set a touch to one side. Buy the same design twice, and you will spot it. Those small differences are not flaws, but the mark of the hand that made them, and they are much of the reason these hand-painted Christmas ornaments feel personal in a way a printed bauble does not.
