Texture, warmth and personality

Choosing scatter cushions for your sofa and living room

A scatter cushion does more than add comfort to a sofa. Chosen well, it introduces texture, warmth, and a layer of personality to a room that furniture alone cannot provide. The key is to think in terms of fabric first. A plain linen cushion on a sofa brings a quiet, considered quality that suits almost any scheme. Add a wool cushion with a hand-woven stripe alongside it and the interplay of textures becomes the point, neither competing, both contributing.

Neptune's scatter cushion collection is built around natural fibres throughout. Linen, wool, cotton, and sheepskin sit at the core of the range, chosen for their tactile quality and the way they sit naturally alongside Neptune's wider collection. Each scatter cushion is filled with 100% white duck feather for a plump, settled feel that holds its shape without feeling rigid. Covers are removable with concealed YKK zips across the range, making care straightforward.

The collection spans plain and textured designs, printed linens, hand-woven wool stripes, and sheepskin, giving enough variety to layer across a sofa or armchair without the room feeling busy. For those who want to add seating at floor level, the Orissa woven jute floor cushion offers a more relaxed, artisanal option that works equally well indoors or out. For outdoor use, Neptune's dedicated outdoor cushions collection offers weather-resistant designs made for garden sofas, chairs, and benches.

Natural fabrics, considered design

Neptune's approach to scatter cushions follows the same principle as the wider collection; start with natural materials and let the texture do the work. The palette is honed to warm neutrals and earthy tones, making it straightforward to mix designs across a sofa without the arrangement feeling overdressed. A plain linen cushion alongside a hand-woven wool stripe, or a printed linen next to a sheepskin, creates the kind of layered, textured quality that gives a living room its character.

Some designs in the collection are created in collaboration with independent textile makers. The Grace cushion, for example, features an original hand-drawn floral design by London-based textile designer Beki Bright, whose work draws on eighteenth-century harvest etchings for its inspiration. This connection to craft and artisan making gives the printed cushions a depth that goes beyond pattern alone.

Scatter cushions FAQ's

Neptune's scatter cushions are made from natural fibres throughout. Wool designs feature a 100% wool front woven on a traditional frame loom using natural fibre dyed yarn, giving each cushion its distinctive texture and depth. Linen designs range from lightweight Harry linen with fine yarn slubs to heavy stonewashed Belgian linen, each chosen for its character and durability. Printed designs use a linen and cotton blend for strength and suppleness. For something more tactile, the Tussock sheepskin is sourced from New Zealand specifically for the quality of its curly fleece.

Neptune's scatter cushions are designed primarily as sofa cushions and armchair cushions for the living room, but they work naturally across the home. In the bedroom, a linen or wool cushion layered in front of pillows adds texture without disrupting the calm of the space. On a window seat or reading nook, a larger cushion brings comfort and a considered finishing touch. The sheepskin designs work particularly well on wooden dining chairs or benches, softening harder surfaces without overpowering them. Wherever they are placed, the natural fibre palette ensures they sit quietly within any scheme.

Start with a neutral foundation, a plain linen or wool cushion in a warm, understated tone, then build in texture and pattern gradually. A hand-woven stripe alongside a plain style brings quiet interest without visual noise. A printed linen introduced as the final layer adds character without dominating. As a general guide, dedicate the majority of the arrangement to plain or textured designs, reserving pattern for one or two accent pieces. Neptune's palette is honed to warm neutrals and earthy tones, which means designs from across the collection mix naturally without needing to be matched exactly.

Care depends on the fabric. Linen cushion covers can generally be machine-washed on a delicate cycle at 40°C, though tumble drying should be avoided. Wool and sheepskin designs require dry cleaning only. The woven jute floor cushion should be spot cleaned with cold water rather than washed. Across the range, cushion pads should never be washed. Neptune recommends plumping feather-filled pads weekly to redistribute the filling and keep them in shape. Always check the care label on individual designs as instructions vary, and refer to Neptune's care guidance on textiles for full details.
